Foil lamination of PVC profiles

TAKA was founded in 2003 as a manufacturer of reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesives especially for the film lamination of PVC window profiles. However, the owner-managed family business already looked back on three generations in the production of polyesters, which meant that the production of PUR adhesives was a logical further development. The necessary know-how was completed by the sister company WPR, which specialised in the production of high-quality profile laminating systems. Thus, the experience from the mechanical process of profile wrapping also flowed into the development of the PUR adhesives.
The hot-melt adhesives developed at that time are still the best-selling products in film lamination today. Over time, other special adhesives were added that are characterised by special properties in order to meet the various quality requirements of our customers.

Why are PUR adhesives used in film lamination?

Reactive polyurethane hot-melt adhesives differ from other hot-melt adhesives, such as EVA or polyolefin adhesives, by their chemical cross-linking. While other hot melt adhesives create the adhesive bond merely by physically curing through cooling, PUR adhesives undergo chemical cross-linking in the following hours after processing, which is an irreversible process. As a result, PUR hotmelt adhesives offer particularly high resistance to moisture and extreme temperatures; conditions to which the finished PVC window is permanently exposed during its lifetime. Thus, TAKA’s PUR adhesives guarantee a long-lasting bond of the decorative film to the PVC profiles, which can also withstand extreme weather conditions. This allows window profile manufacturers to pass on long product guarantees to their customers, making the film-laminated PVC window a long-lasting top product not only visually but also technically.

Quality

For TAKA, quality means not only excellent product properties, but above all continuity and deliverability even under difficult market conditions. Thanks to the in-house production of raw materials, such as polyesters, which form the basis for the production of HMPUR adhesives, TAKA not only has full quality control of the entire production process, but is also largely independent of raw material shortages and supply bottlenecks.

Own raw material production

In addition, thanks to the specially formulated polyesters, adhesive properties can be achieved that cannot be achieved with commercially available polyesters and can therefore only be found in TAKA’s range of adhesives. Our customers benefit from the special product properties of our PUR adhesives, which meet the special requirements of the laminating process. Special requirements can be, for example, extreme weather resistance for tropical or subtropical climates, accelerated cross-linking for shorter storage times or processing at lower temperatures. For all challenges, TAKA has developed products that guarantee our customers process reliability and long-lasting end products.

Quality assurance

All our adhesive systems, i.e. PUR adhesives and primers are certified according to the RAL 716 standard of the Gütegemeinschaft Kunststoff-Fensterprofilsysteme (GKFP) and are approved in all combinations for the profile lamination of PVC window profiles. This means that our PUR adhesives are subject to constant quality controls at TAKA itself, but also at our customers. In particular, the peel strength after lamination and the weathering resistance are tested in an accelerated ageing process (thermolysis/hydrolysis) and must achieve high minimum values.

Sustainability

In addition to increasingly high-performance adhesives, TAKA places particular emphasis on development in the direction of sustainable products. On the one hand, Taka has developed products for all applications that contain a reduced proportion of monomeric diisocyanates. These so-called “micro emission” or “low monomer” adhesives have an isocyanate content of less than 0.1 percent by weight and are therefore not subject to the labelling obligation for hazardous substances according to EU regulation. On the other hand, Taka is working on increasing the content of renewable raw materials in our products and thus reducing the proportion of fossil raw materials as far as possible. These so-called “bio-based” PUR adhesives are an important contribution to further reducing the carbon footprint in the PVC window supply chain and coming closer to the common goal of climate neutrality. In addition, Taka produces with the most modern equipment, which is completely powered by electricity from 100% renewable energy sources.

Training courses

However, TAKA is much more than a trusted supplier of PUR adhesives and primers for profile lamination; a steadily growing part of our work is service and training for our customers. The ACADEMY, founded especially for our customers, offers a comprehensive range of training courses on the subject of profile lamination. It is aimed at company owners, production managers, quality control and machine operators alike. Our aim is to provide our customers with all the information and tools they need to produce high-quality and competitive PVC products.
