The PVC used in window and door frames today isn’t the same material it was a few decades ago. Modern formulations offer significantly improved mechanical and thermal properties, making the PVC window a technically sound choice in several aspects.

The advantages of PVC windows

The main advantages of PVC windows include:

  • High thermal insulation: the profile’s multi-chamber structure effectively reduces thermal bridging.
  • Resistance to the elements: the material doesn’t corrode, doesn’t rot and stands up well to rain, humidity and changes in climate.
  • Reduced maintenance: unlike wood, it requires no periodic protective treatments.
  • A contribution to energy saving: better insulation translates into lower consumption for heating and cooling, with a positive impact both financially and environmentally.

Is the PVC window sustainable?

To answer the question “is the PVC window sustainable?”, it helps to compare it with the two other most widespread alternatives on the market: wood and aluminium.

The comparison calls for several variables to be considered together: raw materials, production energy, durability, maintenance, energy performance, recyclability and eventual disposal.

PVC windows or wooden windows?

Wood is a renewable resource, and on paper this gives it an initial environmental advantage. However, to ensure good durability outdoors it requires periodic maintenance (protective treatments, painting, inspections), which carries a recurring environmental cost over the long term.

PVC, by contrast, needs none of these interventions and retains its dimensional and performance stability with minimal maintenance — a factor that partly offsets wood’s initial advantage as a renewable raw material.

PVC windows or aluminium windows?

Aluminium is a highly recyclable material, and this is certainly a point in its favour.

It should be borne in mind, though, that the energy required for its primary production is considerably higher than that needed for PVC.

From the point of view of thermal performance, moreover, aluminium is a good conductor of heat: without an effective thermal break, it tends to generate greater heat loss than a PVC profile, which is naturally more insulating.

Is PVC recyclable?

One of the most common objections concerns the material’s end of life. In reality, PVC window recycling is a well-established process: old profiles can be recovered through mechanical recycling processes and reintroduced, in the form of recycled material, into the production of new profiles.

This recycling mechanism forms part of a circular-economy approach in the window and door sector, reducing the need to produce virgin PVC and limiting the amount of material sent to landfill.

Recyclable PVC windows are therefore an important element in closing the loop of the product’s life cycle, making PVC window frames a sustainable choice.

Wrapping quality: a factor often underestimated in the sustainability of the window

When it comes to the life cycle of windows, too little attention is often paid to the quality of the surface wrapping, which in fact has a direct bearing on the overall sustainability of the product.

In this respect, HMPUR adhesives make a significant contribution to extending the useful life of the window: a stable, lasting bond between profile and decorative foil reduces replacement and maintenance work, preserving both the aesthetic and the functional performance of the product over time.

But the quality of the glue alone isn’t enough to guarantee a lasting result. An equally decisive factor concerns the application parameters with which the lamination is carried out during production.

Among the most critical parameters are:

  • The temperature of the PVC profile during application: a correct range, generally between 45 and 55°C, ensures optimal adhesion. Temperatures that are too low compromise the formation of the adhesive bond, while temperatures above 55°C can alter the characteristics of the materials used.
  • Correct application and drying of the primer: the primer’s job is to prepare the surface of the profile by improving the glue’s “grip,” but to be effective it must be distributed evenly and left to dry for the intended time before the bonding stage.

When these parameters are respected, the result is optimal adhesion between profile, glue and decorative foil, which translates in concrete terms into a window able to withstand thermal stress, humidity and ageing for longer.

The sustainability of a window is also measured by how long it lasts

A high-quality PVC window built with stable profiles and good thermal insulation may today be one of the most sustainable solutions available on the market. Within this balance sits the quality of the lamination of PVC profiles, which is not a secondary detail but an element that contributes significantly to the durability, and therefore the overall sustainability, of the product.
